"I don't have the capacity to think through, well, what if, what if, what if," Menendez told me. Mayor Bhalla told me that he began contemplating his primary challenge shortly after the elder Menendez was first indicted in September. "Everything here is a headline or a deadline driving the process," Councilman Paul Presinzano said of Mayor Bhalla. Menendez looks on as Bhalla's opening remarks at a Jersey City candidate forum are filmed by a cameraman.

For years, Wisconsin has been one of the most heavily gerrymandered states in the country, with legislative districts that overwhelmingly favored Republicans. In fact, the maps were so one-sided that, even though the state has a roughly equal share of Democrats and Republicans, Republicans were able to lock in large majorities in the State Assembly and Senate. But earlier this year, the state adopted new maps, which have significantly changed the political landscape in the state for Democrats. They are newly optimistic. So after months of hearing about President Biden’s problems motivating the Democratic base, we traveled to the critical battleground state of Wisconsin to ask: Have new maps led to new energy for Democrats, up and down the ballot?

That changed on Thursday, when Mr. Brown appeared to address Mr. Gunter for the first time, at a private fund-raising event in Sparks, Nev., after Mr. Gunter accused him in ads and appearances of being disingenuous and not sufficiently pro-Trump. A group backing Mr. Brown’s campaign, the Duty First PAC, ran its first television ad this week since last year, a $322,000 reservation, according to the tracking firm AdImpact. Mr. Brown’s campaign declined to comment on Mr. Gunter. Mr. Trump made several posts seeming to express his approval for Mr. Brown on Truth Social, his social media platform, this month. The U.S. government is considering laws to help society adapt to the introduction of artificial intelligence. Economists have worried for years that artificial intelligence could sink job prospects for white-collar workers, similar to the effects globalization has had on blue-collar workers in the past. In 2023, lawmakers in the New York State Assembly put forward a measure to limit the expected impact of tech-driven layoffs with robot taxes. Many economists have said that robot taxes, if used at all, should be set at a relatively low level. Watch the video above to learn more about the U.S. government's plan to regulate artificial intelligence.

In February, new legislative maps in Wisconsin were signed into law after more than a decade of partisan wrangling and legal battles. The new maps undid the gerrymander that had helped Republicans keep control of both state legislative chambers since 2012. Work is part of our identity here in a way that people from other countries find at turns fascinating and pathological. The bill would aim to ensure that people aren’t pinged with work emails, texts or calls outside their established work hours, with notable exceptions for emergencies or scheduling issues. If the boss intrudes on your non-work window three times, you can report them and the state could impose fines starting at $100. No one likes pausing Succession to respond to a 9pm request, but the guilt of ignoring it and wondering whether your boss will be mad at you is also, like, not fun. A historically tight labor market has given workers more leverage to negotiate their pay, hours and working conditions.

Here’s what experts and the FDA say about this clause in the modern context, and what you should know about the safety of decaf coffee. “There is more information on the toxicity of methylene chloride and the levels at which it causes this toxicity,” she added. Then there is the Swiss Water Process, which decaffeinates the beans by soaking them in warm water. The Clean Label Project, an organization that tests consumer products for hidden industrial and environmental contaminants, has detected methylene chloride in several brands of coffee. What you can do nowWhether or not the FDA eventually bans methylene chloride is a decision that could take years.

The visits come amid a notable lull in Trump’s campaign activity in the weeks since he became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. Along with Pennsylvania, Trump’s stunning 2016 victories in Michigan and Wisconsin produced a seismic crack in the so-called blue wall of states Democrats had relied on in every election going back to 1992. Early polls suggest Michigan and Wisconsin pose a challenge for Biden and an opportunity for Trump to mine for electoral votes in the upper Midwest. The former president attacked Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in 2022 for refusing to decertify the state’s presidential result, which he did not have the power to do. However, Trump’s campaign has yet to air a single ad in the state.

When New Yorkers concern themselves with rodents, they typically focus on how to kill them. The bill would ban the sale and use of what are known as glue boards — cheap, sticky traps that can be strewed around construction sites or tossed under kitchen cabinets and forgotten. If the legislation is successful, New York would join a growing list of places that passed bans recently, like Scotland and Ojai, a city in California with a population of about 7,500, which made glue traps illegal this month. In January, Representative Ted W. Lieu, a Democrat who represents Los Angeles, introduced the Glue Trap Prohibition Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. “We don’t need to lose our humanity just because we don’t like having as many rodents in our midst as we currently do.”

Republicans are expected to hold the seat easily, and the party’s fragile majority in the chamber is not at stake. The district, which cuts through the Central Valley farm belt including parts of Bakersfield and Fresno, is the most strongly Republican seat in heavily Democratic California. Fong and Boudreaux have advanced to the November election in that contest. The special election only covers the time remaining in McCarthy’s term, running through early next year. Johnson isn't buying arguments from the bill's Republican backers that she didn't inspire the proposed change to a longstanding law. Republican state lawmakers who favor the ban have argued that winning twice often means abandoning the lower office, creating a costly special election. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion last year for her role in a pro-gun control protest inside the Tennessee House chamber. Republican lawmakers are considering changes that target Jones and Pearson, too. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada jury has awarded about $130 million in damages in a lawsuit filed by five people who suffered liver damage after drinking bottled water marketed by a Las Vegas-based company before the product was recalled from store shelves in 2021. Real Water attorney Joel Odou argued that the company was unintentionally negligent, not reckless, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The Southern Nevada Water Authority, the region's main public supplier, monitors and tests for 166 different possible contaminants, spokesman Bronson Mack said Thursday. Mack noted that the water authority was not a defendant in the lawsuits and said the area's municipal water supply meets or surpasses all federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Real Water was sold for at least eight years, primarily in Central and Southern California, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Utah.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Democrats are inching closer to overturning Republican-drawn legislative maps that the GOP has used over the past 13 years to grow their majorities and advance their agenda. Republican maps adopted in 2022 by the conservative-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court used the 2011 map as a template and kept largely the same lines in place. The Wisconsin Supreme Court in December agreed and ordered new maps to be drawn in time for the November election. Her vote was the difference maker in the 4-3 December ruling tossing the Republican maps. The Wisconsin Supreme Court also has been asked by Democrats to take up a challenge to the state’s congressional district lines.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republicans who control the Wisconsin state Assembly were poised Thursday to pass a bill that would call for a binding statewide referendum to ban abortion after 14 weeks of pregnancy. Current Wisconsin law prohibits abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood, which had ceased providing abortion services following the U.S. Supreme Court decision, resumed operations in September following the Dane County ruling. The case is on appeal and likely will end up before the state Supreme Court. Republicans will have tough time persuading Protasiewicz and the rest of the liberal majority to reinstate the abortion ban in full.

Gavin Newsom said he will not sign a proposed ban on tackle football for children under 12, ending advocates' short-lived hopes of having the bill become law this year. “I will not sign legislation that bans youth tackle football,” Newsom said in a statement late Tuesday. The goal was to have kids play flag football until age 12, which would give athletes about three years of playing tackle football before entering high school. “We collectively look forward to working with you and the California legislative body to drive the California Youth Football Act as the most comprehensive youth tackle football safety measure in the country,” White said.
